Mews at Muntri Mews
T FoodFriends Penang
July 2008 George Town Penang was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage
Site and this recognition created awareness among people with
vision to invest in George Town.
we saw more and more beautiful building being restored to their
former glory and the life and soul being returned to the city
of George Town.
In 2009 Christopher Ong acquired a grade 2 listed building which
was formerly a stables for carriages. The building is beautifully
restored. Here I quote from their own website, as the description
is perfect: " Ong has revitalised this historic premises
by infusing it with Malay, Chinese and European influences that
have made his entrepot hometown world famous".
Mews is chic, stylish heritage boutique hotel in the heart of
George Town, ideally located to explore the city on foot. They
advertise as "affordable accommodation for today's flash-packer"
and this is true.
Kafe Mews is at the entrance of Muntri Mews. Its a small no fuss
no frills cafe with seating inside and al fresco dining for those
who want to watch the street life and enjoy the lush garden. It's
hard to describe but there is something very calming as you enter,
the staff are very friendly with a warm welcome.
food menu is limited with a small selection of both Asian and
western favorites. The prices are very affordable. We arrived
early for lunch and had our pick of tables; we choose one so we
could enjoy looking out on to the garden. We ordered the beer
battered fish and chips and Helen's curry to share. The fish was
excellent, the batter very light and tasty and the curry bursting
the drinks menu is small but full of amazing mixes in juices,
I ordered limejuice, which was the best I ever had. We finished
with coffee, which was extremely good.
Our quite lunch made a lovely change from the busy mall coffee
houses and we got to appreciate the beauty of George Town. Definitely
a place we will be returning too!
